Anyone know the space to be allowed for children in a classroom. I think building regs require 0.5m2 per person for meeting rooms is there anything specific for schools? cheers Steve

Meeting rooms are 1.0 sq m per person according to ACOP B of Building Regs, page 18.
Schools are not listed in the table....hmmmmmm doesn't look correct. read the notes at the bottom of page 18 in particualr No.2 and No.1
Sorry if that does not help !

Hi Stephen,
There used to be school premises regs which I think may have covered this. I can't remember their exact name (perhaps they've been repealed?)
sorry not much use

Having had time to think about it, what does it matter anyway, the school will simply overfill it anyway with one teacher to every 326 pupils in their class !

Building Bulletin 7 deals with fire and the design of educational premises but I cannot remember a specific section on room occupancy
you may wish to search yourself or google building bulletin as a means to searching wider
here is the link to BB7

According to the NUT the Regs are no longer specific.
"The 1999 Education (School Premises) Regulations are the current version of regulations which first appeared in 1981. The 1981 Regulations also prescribed minimum space standards for teaching areas and recreation areas in newly built schools but these provisions were never applied to existing schools and were removed, despite NUT opposition, in 1995."

Dar Stephen
Have a look at the DfES web site and down load Building Bulletin 98, which gives space requirements for all school activities.
