I am a generalist H/S person who has acquainted himself with the WAH Regs and HSE training materials for working at heights. I have not, as yet, obtained my copy of BS 8454;2006. After spending my £98 am I likely to be much better informed.?Is this publication a MUST for any safety professional attempting to deliver in house 'working at heights' training?.Will this training standard come back to haunt me and my organisation when 'Jimmy' takes a tumble from the top step of the stepladder?.Let's assume Jimmy has seen the 'don't do video',obtained the HSE training literature and indicated by way of tick boxes etc that he understood what was being told to him.?
Does this BS Training standard mean ANY form of 'Working at Heights Training is best left to formally trained and accredited trainers'. I would hope to be assured by those familar with BS 8454 that this is not the case.

BS 8454 is applicable to training for work which falls within the scope of the WAHR 2005. It is applicable to training for work at height in an industrial context, including work at height in factories and in the construction, civil engineering and cleaning sectors.

It is not applicable to the provision of training for low level work at height (e.g. the use of small stepladders or “hop-ups” in retail environments or libraries). Also, it is not applicable to training which consists purely of the provision of simple instruction or product familiarization or site induction.

BS 8454 is applicable to all training and education for work at height. This includes “train-the-trainer” type situations. It’s intended for use by all organizations and individuals providing such training and/or education, including organizations which provide such training to their own employees.

It is applicable to all locations where such training is provided, whether at a dedicated training facility or at other training sites. The standard does not give a detailed specification of course content.
