Our organisation has an Emergency Spillage Procedure and and it is compulsory for staff dealing with the spillage to have appropriate spillage training based on this procedure.
I am not sure if is this supposed to be a one-time-off training or do we have to conduct a refresher training at a certain interval of time. Need advice. Thanks.

It is always good practice to refresh the training given to staff on any emergency procedure or formal training. As a business you can decide the frequency of that refresher training. As a guide and in general most vocational training given is refreshed every three years however if the spillage procedure is safety critical you may wish to shorten that period. Its down to risk assessment, how often are there spills, what is the substance that is spilt, what is the potential for damage, loss and injury etc and who might be affected. And finally does the procedure work and do your staff follow procedure when they have been trained, how long before they forget to do what they have been trained to do?

Posted By Andy Brazier Totally agree with Chris. The only thing you need to think about is frequency of spills. If infrequent it may appear that risk from spills is low and so refresher training not required. In fact opposite is probably true. If you have frequent spills people will get frequent practice and may not need refresher training. Do your risk assessment as Chris suggests then consider how that risk is affected if people do not respond. Then consider the risk if they respond incorrectly. That should give you a good idea of how important refresher training is likely to be. Andy www.andybrazier.co.uk
