I have been asked to complete risk assessments and safe systems of work. It involves the loading of household waste/general waste at a council site and then transportation to a council waste site were it is unloaded. Does anyone have general or specific risk assessments etc for such a process which I could use as a guide or could anyone direct me in the right direction as my background is in engineering and these need to be completed over the next week. Any information would be appreciated.

Would you not have someone within your company who is a safety practitioner to undertake this task? The process you are wishing to create a SSOW for which will include RA's can be a fairly complex one as there are many parts from collection to conclusion and each task within the process needs to be identified; when this is done you can start to create a SSOW for the process.
Sorry I can't help more.

Suggest you type 'refuse collection'into the search field at www.hse.gov.uk - loads of stuff there! Risks will to a large extent depend on the condition 7 layout of both sites, traffic management arrangements, segregation of pedestrians/public, the type(s) of containers and ther type of vehicles involved. Hope this is of some help!

The waste industry is one of the highest risk and most accident prone industries that we have - only competent people should undertake works therein
the youngest bin-man that has been killed in the last few years was 12 [YES 12] years old - its a long story - hence the need for competence -
I investigated our service after the death of the 12 year [Yorkshire not us] old and found out that we had special needs people being [unoficially] used by one gang
