Im a shift supervisor on a top tier COMAH site producing 3000000+ tonnes of steel a year.I have significant health and safety duties and responsibilities in my role.I have a wealth of "on the job" real world experience.I am not office based although I have one.
I come on this forum for help and advice outside of work as I dont have time at work.
Some of the advice I receive is helpful and some of the posts I have read are educational and interesting.
The disappointing part for me is how despite previous posts by others pointing this out, some regular contributors still only seem to want to show how clever they are, doling out their valuable opinions and advice to us lesser mortals.
Thank god for the majority of people who contribute to these forums with their well intentioned if not always correct advice.
Keep posting in the spirit you have been and leave the griping and sniping to the usual suspects ,how do they find the time and energy to post on here, being that clever must be exhausting.

Totally agree with you.

I know people who no longer contribute to the site due to the condescending attitude of others.

How about we have a section titled "Too Embarressed to Ask", that way the clever ones can avoid reading it and keep their knowledge all to themselves.

Mark,

if you don't like the irony then don't be so piggish.

Sorry. But you are right.

The spirit of this site is "friendly" advice. with a bit of back-chat. I have learnt things from this site that I didn't even know I needed to know.

And it is the only site I come back to more than once a day.

What's the Latin again for "if it ain't broke don't fix it" ?

non cassus non reficiat (?) nah can't be right

Merv

why doesn't this spell checker recognise latin ?

"with their well intentioned if not always correct advice".
That is hardly a recommendation for using a site hosted by a professional body is it? It may be a fact, but certainly should not be the only reason to contribute or limit the type of person to contribute.

"only seem to want to show how clever they are, doling out their valuable opinions and advice to us lesser mortals".
Surely this is just a perception that you and others have adopted. How do you determine whether someone is just being helpful or “doling out”? Does it mean I am not allowed to contribute by offering competent advice in case i should be perceivd as "doling out"?

"how do they find the time and energy to post on here, being that clever must be exhausting".
Why is this statement any less patronising or condescending than those that you complain of?

This is an open forum and all of us should be able to use it without “the griping and sniping”. I just feel so strongly that your thread is just that”.

There it is said now.
Now what was the safety content of this discussion? Ah yes, the importance of choosing the right communication method for the audience and venue. I wish I was more competent than I demonstrate all too frequently.

Where in my post did I say that there should only one reason to contribute or that the type of person should be limited???

To those it is aimed at,fair comment

Mark - you have put down the literal translation but you should understand he is joking.

Think your job, then iron, then think pig and maybe you will get it.

And maybe there lies the problem - is it a matter of perception, is there is a need to look a little deeper into the words seen on the page, without jumping to conclusions that some people are having a go.

Think about it.

All Forum members have an equal right to reply, not all need to be read though!

Even us lowly Div 2 Grimbarians !!

It is your choice to take or ignore anyone's advice on here.

I, for one, always try to avoid the long preachy texts with quotes from various web pages or tracts of legislation.

Most people want a practical solution to a practical problem.

A lot of my answers don't just come from H&S experience - I had thirty years in many varied industries before moving across to H&S work ten years ago.

I didn't want to be climbing refinery cracking towers on Conoco, Killingholme, at fifty, with the work tool bag on my back.

I quite frankly scavenge good hints and tips from many contributors on this site, and although I look at bitchy threads, it's not worth digging at them unless something personal comes out of a posting.

It's bad enough having spam posters of ridiculous threads without proper forum regulars getting uptight !

It's Friday - lighten up, it could be worse - I know a Welshman who writes your Corus Scunthorpe software programmes, now that IS scary, knowing the man himself !!

have a good weekend !

I fail to see the point of even beginning this thread. When you say...

"The disappointing part for me is how despite previous posts by others pointing this out, some regular contributors still only seem to want to show how clever they are, doling out their valuable opinions and advice to us lesser mortals."

That is the very reason I joined IOSH, visit the forums, read magazines, and seek advice from colleagues. Mark if you think that those with a wealth of knowledge posting replies that maybe do not sit comfortably with you is disappointing, then have you then also started a new thread to moan about it. Don't get me wrong, I am not having a pop at you, but complain to IOSH about the time wasters and inappropriate posts by all means, but to bring this opinion to the forum I believe is a bit insulting to those that honestly believe their posts are useful to others. There is no reward for posting here, and personally, the more information I can get in the forums without having to search for it, the more grateful I am. Because of the posts here, (and yes they may well be from those that like to display their level of knowledge), I know things about subjects which are of absolutely no interest to me, and will not help me in my current position, but in the future, who knows. Just an opinion.

Phil,I should have been clearer in what I was posting about. There are some on here who take great delight in mocking other peoples posts and replys when they make a mistake or ask what some perceive as a stupid question.
I think you are right,I posted this when I was annoyed at another contributor who had done just that,in retrospect I shouldnt have posted this
I also come on here for advice and to learn,I have learnt.
If the mods would lock or remove this this post I would appreciate it.
Mark.

Ah yes the cracking towers at Conoco Humber, you could get some nice views from up there.

Always prefered the coke drums though since they had a lift :-) with views across to the humber bridge.

Ona nice day you could have a quite walk around the tank farm and even go deer spotting if you so wished

South Ferriby is nice, the hope and anchor even after the recent refurb still does nice food and good beer.

And if you like mountain biking then the nearby quarries are superb! not for the faint hearted though
