Posted By May Warley Hi everybody Need your opinion. I hv just been a Quality Controller for my organisation for 7 months and yesterday my boss told me that he would eventually pass the H&S responsibilities to me. He told me to look out for relevant courses to take and let him know. The trouble is I don't know which course to go for first. Like all employees in the company, I hv attended our in-house manual handling course. We have our in-house H&S procedures and a policy as well. Should I enrol myself on a part time graduate course at a uni? Thanks in advance.

Posted By Rochelle Eames Hi there I think most people would recommend the NEBOSH general Cert which you can do day release, evening, distance or block release. Have a look on the NEBSOH website nebosh.org.uk and have a look to for courses in your area. Good luck

Posted By Marcus74 Judging you have no H & S experience, maybe you could start with the IOSH Working Safely - Managing Safely course. Info here: http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...go=courses.workingSafely And here: http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...o=courses.managingSafely I did this in house with my company through our Union but im sure its available externally. The course I did was 3 days long and provided a good foundation on which to build on. From there you could move on to The Nebosh General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent. I chose the BSC level 3 CertOsh course which is pretty much the same as Nebosh Gen Cert but run by the British Safety Council. No particular reason why I picked the BSC it just suited my needs. Im only half way through it though so I can't comment too much but the tutors seem excellent. Info on Nebosh can be found here: http://www.nebosh.org.uk/awardsnew.asp?ID=5 And BSC CertOsh here: http://www.britishsafety...ourses/certosh/index.htm Hope this helps and good luck in your forthcoming H & S role

Posted By Phillipe May I am not sure whether you could do a part time grad course without the underpinning knowledge of H&S i.e. the NEBOSH Cert It is a long road to get the qualifications, but rewards, both financially and experience wise are worth it. Phil

Posted By Darren J Fraser Start with the Nebosh General Cert or equivalent, the General is hard work ending in two 3 hour exams and a practical, but I believe for someone with no experience it is the most beneficial, my understanding is that NVQ's require evidence from the workplace. However you must choose which is the best option for you, no-one else can decide that for you. Whichever option you choose good luck, visit the forums regularly and you will pick up advice, tips and hints. Welcome to the wonderful world of H&S

Posted By Descarte If your work are going to be handing you H+S responsabilities, is it not their position to be sourcing and funding you suitable courses? Or are they be sly and saying IF you had some H+S training you could get a promotion

Posted By Gareth W Jones May, I have been in the Health and Safety profession for over 12 years, I am also an nvq assessor and verifier, my route was the IOSH managing safely and then the Nebosh general certificate, followed by the nvq level 4 in occupational Health, between these and after I have attended a number of Health and Safety work related courses, I chose the nvq 4 rather than the diploma as I could provide a lot of evidence, which I had collected over the past years. Hope this helps and all the best for your career. Gareth

Posted By mark limon I understood from the posting that the firm is going to pay for the courses,if this is true May then grab the oppurtunity with both hands,if what Descarte suspects might be true then you will have to think carefully before committing your own resources. I would start with the Nebosh Certificate, its hard work but judging by the postings on these forums a lot of people are inspired to go on to further qualifications and a career in safety after achieving it.

Posted By May Warley I'm tired of waiting, so I thought I better check the courses out myself. I hv already taken up ISO9001, ISO14001 and Internal Auditor courses with BSI so far. I did all the 'research' myself, with a lot of help fr BSI staff, of course and just passed the POs for my boss to sign. I'm currently updating the Manual Hamdling Assessment and find that I have still got a lot and I mean, a lottttttt to learn about H&S!!!!!

Posted By Tabs I can't help but think that an auditing course is the wrong place to start. It is rather like becoming a driving examiner before knowing how to drive. Please, look at the advice given by those who have troden the same path and look for a two week NEBOSH General Certificate, there are dozens of providers, but if you need a name to search for on the internet, try CHSS.

Posted By May Warley I need the Auditing course for the QMS/EMS purposes. My boss is going to pass the H&S role to me eventually after I hv completed relevant courses. Like I said before, I have to look for my own training courses and I must hv probably made mistakes in setting my priorities right.

Posted By Marcus74 The original post suggests that there is no current knowledge of H & S in the workplace. I had completed numerous internal H & S courses, Risk Assessment, Manual Handling, Permit to Work etc before I completed the IOSH Working Safely - Managing Safely course. I am so glad that I had that knowledge going into my BSC Level 3 CertOsh because its alot to take in over a two week course. So, In my opinion, if you have very little H & S experience I would still consider the IOSH Working / managing Safely course as a foundation then look at the next level ( Nebosh, CerTosh ) Again, Good luck.
