I work for an organisation that places students with work experience placement providers. Given that these are often sole trader businesses, working one to one with students, is it common practice to run a CRB check on the placement providers? I would appreciate some feedback from those who work in colleges or similar organisations.Thanks.

I don’t know if the following will be helpful to you?

The Universities Safety and Heath Association (USHA) working with the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) are shortly to publish revised guidance on Student Placements.

When this document is published it may well cover the points you are raising.

The document will be provided to USHA and UCEA members but as I understand it will be available for purchase by others.

CRB would not of course be required for the vast majority of HE students who would normally be over 18 before going on a work placement

Jon,
I have assumed that you are referring to year 10 and 11 kids going out on WEX, not over 16 students.
There is very clear guidance on this matter available to schools who will have the duty to decide whether or not CRB checks are relevant to the placement. The visiting placement officers may well have a role in identifying high risk placements but the school decide.
The section in the DfES guidance is headed "Safeguarding children in Education-supplementary DfES guidance for WEX".
Sorry I do not have the e-ref but if you search on that you should find it.
It is not always relevant to do a CRB check, there is a risk based approach.

Thank you both for your comments. These are 16 to 19 year olds and I find it strange that we currently check all who work in college but not placement providers. Any further comments or views welcome.
