If I catch your drift? You need to get some good quality training to breed confidence and then get out into the wild world and take a chance.

I was fire fighter for 24 years and now health and safety 16 years.

Something in common with a previous contributor, I also enjoy cooking and play a mean drum kit.

Sorry....... as metalman - guitar is my hobby as well, probably less of a mean guitar than metalman, more of a jangly folk stylee with some leftover teenage angst ridden radiohead.

Why are people always surprised when the safety bloke plays gutar and rides mountain bikes down hills?

I call myself a risk and safety consultant, specialising in human factors. Have a Chemical Engineering degree and PhD, and have worked as a consultant for 10 years, mostly in major hazards (oil, gas, chemical, steel). Went self-employed last year, and doing a bit more basic H&S now.

Windsurfing and badminton are my hobbies.

Andy,

Have you ever thought of combining them? I can see that there might be problems, but it would look great on TV,

Did Cert and was area H&S rep, moved, became site H&S and now in H&S Policy. Lots of fun, I believe I am making the world a better place, piece by piece. If I didn't I wouldn't be doing it!

Hobbies - oh yes, Karate, currently 1st Dan. Being doing it for 16 years and I get some very strange looks when I say this to people - similar to the downhill biker! Also do Scouts and, yes, build lots of fires and use both pen-knives and sheath-knives and axes and saws and and and...

Catman,

Like yourself I get strange responses from some people. i.e. my wife and I attended a GIG on Saturday, in Liverpool. The venue looked a bit dodgy and the noise level was tremendous. Really extremely loud but that's the way some paople like it.

Having attended similar gigs in the past experience led us to use ear plugs which did make a difference in cutting out the unwanted sounds while actually improving the quality of the music input. I looked at everyone else and saw nobody else using ear defenders.

I just wonder why we have to control noise levels at work when we can be exposed to such high levels as members of the paying public. I am aware that there are regulatory limits to noise at concerts but they were obviously ignored.

Spare time DJ and raver - any guitarists fancy a bit of musical entertainment at the conference next year??

Mark, trained as an engineer in high risk industry so like you, H&S has been an integral part of my life. Went full time on H&S in 1987. I often think I know less today than I did 20 years ago!
Been and seen a lot of H&S in lots of places in that time, big snd small. The most interesting in recent years was the glass industry. Just the place for short cuts!!
The issues are always just the same. The difference is often just the consequence of error.

Where do you Scout? We are in Wiltshire West and our troop is planning to have at least ONE NIGHT AWAY PER MONTH for the centenary year. All now planned by Skippa (its a she) or pronounced Skipperr by the locals (lol).

Where are you holding your Sunrise? We are having an all night hike and will be out somewhere (hopefully at the HQ but who knows?).
