This may have cropped up before but i was wondering in our quest to win the hearts and minds of people to embrace safety what sort of quotes do people use to capture their audience.

One I use is the old favourite "Safety is everyone's responsibility"

Or during a truck awareness session i finish with there where 70 people killed last year in truck/pedestrian incidents and 70 drivers killed those people, why knowing that wouldn't you act safer out there. There is always one who answers because you don't think it will happen to you. I reply how many of those 140 people do you think woke up that morning as they walked out their house said goodbye to their loved ones and thought it wont happen to me this morning. EVERY ONE!

Hopefully this hasn't come up too many times and some good ones come out. Including how to get people to take risk seriously.

Thanks in advance

Alan

"When anyone asks me how I can best describe my experience in nearly forty years at sea, I merely say, uneventful. Of course there have been Winter gales, and storms and fog and the like. But in all my experience, I have never been in an accident...or any sort worth speaking about. I have seen but one vessel in distress in all my years at sea. I never saw a wreck and have never been wrecked nor was I ever in any predicament that threatened to end in disaster of any sort."
Captain Edward John Smith - RMS Titanic

I can't confirm that he actually said it.

i alway remember a quote from my good friend Robert Weiland during safety training.

"hey, listen... health and safety is no joke"

simple, but effective....

Cheers Carl, I've copyrighted that quote.

My favourite is "In a phrase you cannot legislate against idiocy, therefore you must guard against it".

Thanks for the contributions thus far, I especially like the Titanic one.

It reminds me of I think it was in charge during the Piper Alpha disaster who said " If you think safety is expensive, try having an accident"

Not strictly safety related

Piper Alpha - the quote you wouldn't want to hear, and this is not being flippant in any way -

"So, which of these permits am I looking at ?"

There are many quote websites around, I've spent many hours being amused by them, then forgetting them when needed.

Whilst away with the military I always tell my boss's that they can
"Use me' Abuse me.. Just don't hurt me!!'

It works.. But they do use and abuse!

How about this regarding safety whilst climbing?

Hi
Recently came across this one:
'Safety is, without doubt, the most crucial investment we make. And the question is not what it costs us, but what it saves'

Another Loss message. I use this when training The Management:-

"The first duty of business is to survive and the guiding principle of business economics is not the maximisation of profit – it is the avoidance of loss…”

I read this one recently.

...more disasters are caused by those who command than by those who fortuitously turn the wrong knob and dump the wrong chemical.

When dealing with contractual commitments, a golden rule regarding verbal blunders was related to me.

It went "A closed mouth gathers no feet"

I recall it every time I deal with contracts.

I saw one a while ago that went something like
Hug the kids at home, and belt them in the car.

The safest car in the world has all the latest devices. Air bag, seat belts, and a six inch spike on the steering wheel" Ralph Nader

So fear helps me from making mistakes, but I make lot of mistakes. Steve Irwin

out of this nettle, danger, we grasp this flower, safety. Hotspur in Henry IV. William Shakespeare

I would give all my fame for a pot of ale and safety. William Shakespeare.

I don't want to die without any scars. Tyler Durden in Fight Club. Chuck Palahniuk

This is one of my all time favourites:

This is a story about four people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it.
Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did.
Somebody got angry (about that) because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody knew that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Somebody wouldn't do it.
And (/It ended up that) Everybody blamed Somebody because (/when) Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

PS - dont put this on show if you have a sensitive office environment. A few people may thing its aimed at them....

A couple I find that bring home the point.

1. If you think Safety is expensive, try adding up the cost of an accident.

2. Surgeons transplant hearts and lungs, but they can't replace eyes or ears.

3. Cats have 9 lives, but you only have one
