Posted By Chris G The company standard for COSHH where I work defines a carcinogen as a substance which causes cancer. However some of the MHDS for our materials use the terms category 1, category 2 & category 3 carcinogen. COSHH regs 2002 don't make any distinction. So what's the difference? Note: All 3 categories receive the most stringent level of control available, so this is purely to further my understanding of the terminology
Thanks, Chris

Posted By Terry Dodds Hi Chris
My understanding is Class 1 is for substances where there is proven human data Class 2 is for substances where there is proven animal data Class 3 Is for substances causing concern due to possible carcinogenic effects but for which data is inadequate. Hope this helps if I am wrong I am sure someone will correct me.

Posted By garyh I believe you have to go for "ALARP" for Carcinogens exposure; the HSE used to have a good ACOP on Carcinogens (can't remember the ISBN or ACOP number) if not the COSHH ACOP (HSG 97 ISBN 0717627853) is pretty good.

Posted By Jay Joshi COSHH regulations do define "carcinogen "-

(b) a substance or preparation - (i) listed in Schedule 1, or (ii) arising from a process specified in Schedule 1 which is a substance hazardous to health;
Please refer to The COSHH ACOP/Guidance (L 5).Appendix 1 covers the Control of carcinogenic substances
