I understand that under the Carriage of Goods Regs we are allowed to carry upto the following before we come under the need for HAZ CHEM:

· Compressed Acetylene— 1000kg or 1000 Litres

· Dissolved Oxygen 333kg or 333 Litres

· Diesel 1000 Litres

· Petrol 333 Litres

This of course is providing the load is secure, suitable warning diamonds are displayed and a suitable extinguisher is available.

Can we actually carry the above amounts all together or is it a combined amount ?

Load Thresholds for determining full or reduced regulations are as follows:

TC 1 = 20

TC 1 & 2 = Multiply amount of TC 1 by 50, multiply amount of TC 2 by 3, add together total must not exceed 1000

TC 1 & 3 + Multiply amount of TC 1 by 5, add to amout of TC 3 total not to exceed 1000

TC 2 only = 333

TC 2 & 3 = Mulitply amount of TC2 by 3, add to amount of TC 3 - total not to exceed 1000

TC 3 only = 1000

TC 4 only = none as reduced regulations apply regardless of amount

TC 4 with others = ignore the amount of TC4 and calculate for other TC's as above.

Hope this makes sense

I think you probably mean Dissolved Acetylene (Transport Category TC2); Compressed oxygen (TC3); Diesel (TC3); and Petrol (TC2).

Follow Debbie's calculation above to determine allowable quantities.

Simple answer is that you wouldn't be allowed to carry them all in one load.

Ooops, yeah it was dissolved acetylene and compressed oxygen.

To be honest im a tad confused over the calculations Debbie has kindly posted.

We run a number of service/customer support/recovery vehicles and have to undertake welding roadside and carry the odd bit of fuel too.

How do I work this out ??

Add the quantity of acetylene to the quantity of petrol and multiply the answer by 3.

Add the quantity of oxygen and the quantity diesel to this answer.

The overall answer must not be more than 1000.

Compressed Oxygen — 1000kg or 1000 Litres compressed gas TC3
Dissolved Acetylene 333kg or 333 Litres flammable gas TC 2
Diesel 1000 Litres TC3
Petrol 333 Litres TC2
Any of these carried on its own would not come under curtain requirements of the Carriage regulations (ADR)

But they definitely would if all of these are carried on the vehicle at the same time and in these quantities

So let us try and work out a solution whereby you remain below the target figure of 1000

One oxygen cylinder TC3 with a water capacity of 57 ltrs = 57
One Acetylene cylinder TC2 with water capacity of 57ltrs = 171 i.e 57x3=171
One jerry can of petrol containing 20 ltrs TC2 = 60 ie 20x3= 60
One jerry can diesel containing 20 ltrs TC3= 20

57+171+60+20 = 308

Well below the 1000 specified in 1.1.3.6.4 of the ADR.
This is bread and butter stuff for a transport orientated Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser
