Hi All,

Here's one that follows a theme. In the Western Mail (Wales' National Paper) " Schools are calling off after-school sports activities because of fears about the safety of cars used by parents to transport pupils.

Teachers in the Swansea education area have been told they need to check parents' MOT and car insurance details. The papers website is www.icwales.co.uk.

My question is has Geremy Clarkson bee getting at them?

Bob.

Parents Transporting other Parents kids between schools in their own car (for the school itself)is a minefield.

Much easier to hire a minibus and have a teacher do it.

What seems to have happened here is a confusion over the use of the word parent; there is clearly a difference between somebody who is a parent acting in that capacity taking their child and maybe his or her friends to or from fixtures without any active involvement by the school in the transport arrangements and a person acting as a volunteer who is also a parent of a child at the school. Taking the word 'parent' out of the guidance and using the word 'volunteer' would clear up the confusion and also deny journalists a good shock-horror headline.

What bothers me is that it is teachers who are making this error, surely it says something about their grammatical skills?

John

PS Sorry about the very long sentence.

I thought that long sentences were becoming popular in health and safety, John.

Can't the school get the actual parents/guardians to sign that they will arrange for their children to be collected from the sports venues - like they do from the school gates - thereby putting the responsibility on them to provide proper transport - if the school isn't prepared to hire a coach to take them back to the school?
