First Aid at Work - qualifications required to run courses?

Posted By Sharon Rackley I really need some help with this one guys as I am fast running out of time!
Hypothetically, could a Safety Advisor with a NEBOSH Cert, run a course on First Aid at Work?
What qualifications does an individual need in order to be able to run First Aid at work courses, First Aid requalifiers and Appointed Persons courses?
How much would it cost if additional qualifications are required or if we would need to register a head tutor or the company as a training centre?
Could (in theory) our Occupational Health Advisors run these courses (having been for the most part, qualified nurses in the past)?
I'm just trying to show how theoretically we could save time & money on health & safety training in our company, and providing this training in-house was one of my ideas on cost cutting.
Thanks in advance for any help :)

Posted By Phil H It is a question of competence as I believe trained nurses for example can give in theory such training. However it is one of those subjects that can be more trouble than it is worth. The trainer must deliver up to date training ,produce lesson notes etc and be prepared to stand by what they teach. If something goes wrong as a result of teaching the wrong technique the consequencescould be serious. Best practice and techniques change allthe time. I would check with your insurance company for their spin on it and teh red cross society are very helpful.

Posted By Rob Slater Hi, The only First Aid course you or your nurses can run is the First Aid Appointed Person. However I believe you must be a qualified First Aider to teach that. In order to do the full First Aid at Work course you need to be approved by the HSE, and need trainers, assessors etc. The costs of this are about £1000 and are not refundable if you don't pass!

Posted By Sovay Shaw Hi Sharon You can only teach HSE approved First Aid At Work courses if your organisation has prior HSE approval,(see the HSE website -www.hse.gov.uk/firstaid/training.htm "Guide to Gaining & Maintaining HSE Approval". All instructors and assessors have to prove that they are qualified in First Aid and the establishment has to maintain sufficient numbers of qualified staff, equipment (i.e. CPR mannequins) and administrative support, so quite a setup is needed.
On the other hand, you don't need all that for an 'Appointed Person', but remember if you are teaching it, you should really be qualified in first aid yourself, preferably having an HSE First Aid at Work certificate and the experience to do this adequately. If you issue them a certificate, they will only be an 'Appointed Person' and not a 'First Aider'.
Hope that is helpful, so if you need 'First Aiders', you're stuck with going to an approved provider. (I teach and assess First Aid at a College with an HSE approval.)
