We all know H+S profesionals are fairly well paid, but do they get a lot of satisfaction from there job?

We all know it can be frustrating at times, but at the end of the day do you like your job and feel happy and satisfied with it?

Hi
I am very happy in my work. I go home satisfied and aware that I might (just might) have made a difference.

Others may feel differently!

This is one of the best jobs in the world; just beaten by:

- professional footballer (or any other sport)
- Member of the leading political party
- HRH
- Top Gear Presenter
- Singer/member of rock group

In that order!

Why do you ask?

Not satisifed with my job at all - after 10years, health and safety management is a very boring occupation. Got qualified to CMIOSH - why did I bother?

Luckily starting a new job in 2 weeks, leaving just about all h&s behind, having finally escaped from H&S after 18mths of trying.

Every job has a natural cycle.

Good luck to all you new starters, but there is more to work than h&s.

There will be a vacancy in the West Yorkshire region very soon.....

As regards pay for h&s - its ok, but not outstanding - again, luckily my new job is back into engineering and paying quite a bit more than most h&s jobs.

Manny are you being sarcastic?

I ask because im just starting out, im only doing it a few months and tbh i am finding it a bit boring and monotonous (sp?), doesnt feel like im making much of a differnece and most people have a lot of resentment for you, even though your trying to help them.

SO I just wanted to see what other people thought about their jobs.

ANd as for pay, ye its alrite, suppose you will never become rich but its a good living and you wont be stuck for a few quid.

I wish you the very best in your new job 9-ship.

I am like may others on this forum, I have worked myself through a variety of jobs throughout my career journey before taking on this role of H&S Manager, which I have been involved in for several years now.

Totally agree there is more to life than H&S but that can be said for any job. Jobworths are a result of when work takes over the life.

I find my job much the same as anyone does- you get your good days with the bad.

Regarding money- it could be better, but again isn't this always the case.

There is a saying "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence".

Anders i can only assume you have found one of the H&S jobs where you are stuck behind a desk doing administration work?

I haven't been in H&S as long as some but most days are different and i have been to SOOO many varying types of sites its unreal.

Good luck to you though, and hope you find a role that more suits you.

Hi all,

I started full time in health and safety around a year ago, struggling with it at moment in current position but that is because they do not really know how to use me to their best advantage and do not want to allocate funding for safety.

Previous job was excellent, company was somewhere i could have stayed for a lot of years however was 260 miles away from my family and like someone earlier said I could not let it take over my life, my family always come first. So I do currently have my bad days but then I go home to my family so that is the best bit.

I am currently looking for work as it is my responsibility to move on if I do not like it so you should never just accept one experience from one job. This time around 2 years ago I guarded a xmas tree doing security 12 hours a day for £5.05 an hour, I now am on just under 30k so I always take the good with the bad.

I enjoy safety as a prefession and hopefully will be involved for the next 40 years unless I can retire early.

IMHO

1 - Professional footballer (or any other sport) - Burned out at 35 !!!!!
2 - Member of the leading political party - At the mercy of the voters
3 - HRH – No grip on reality
4 - Top Gear Presenter – Nearly died
5 - Singer/member of rock group – One hit wonders or a head full of Persian Rugs ;-)

At least with health & safety:

1- You can work until you drop, trust me I should know
2- You should last as long as your company does
3- Your grip may be no better
4- If you don’t upset too many of “the lads” you should survive ok
5- You may need the latter to get you through the day

Bestest

Each day is different, have not yet had a day where I have completed all that I planned to do because somthing has changed, been in H&S for 4 years and still learning something new, now being asked to cover Environment as well.(No I do not take work home)
The fact that I am respected at all levels within the company may be something to do with it, the shopfloor know that I am happy to pick up a broom and sweep up when they are busy, yet senior managers are also aware that I will tell them straight when there is a problem,.
Pay as good as any other position, with the chance to move. If unhappy with pay I can always move elsewhere, but then money is not everything, a healthy, happy home life is.

I love working in h&s. There are days when i get an enourmous amount of satisfaction from it, however, there are also days when i could very easily walk away from it all......

But like others, i think that this could be said no matter what job you do.

Rough with the smooth, good with the bad.

I can quickly snap out of moments of despair by reminding myself of the times i used to do the same mind numbing tasks day after day after day - no variety, no reason to 'push myself'. In fact, no real reason to use a brain cell........

Anders,
Occasionally I think the same thing - however I think its important that you look at the bigger picture - a H&S job isnt just about writing up RA & MS which I suspect thats what your doing. Try new incentives that will change the general mindset and show safety in a new light, like bringing in guest speakers on key subjects, start a safety bulletin, take a site tour and talk to the 'men on the ground', sometimes you have to make the first move to develop relationships.

Another idea is to think about your safety management system and how your can improve yours or even develop it - read into safety management systems and relate it to your work-place, you'll soon see areas/procedures/policies that need improving or even creating.

Personnally, i think its a cery interesting and challenging career.

Ye in response to man earlier reply I am in a boring Admin sort of health and safety job. Leaving at the moment isnt really an option as i need to gain experience before i can get something else.

Most people seem quite content with their roles, hopefully il find my role in H+S and be happy with it.

A desk job sat tapping at a computer will be boring, get the experience and move on.

I know of a girl who sat doing H&S Files and writing MS & RA for small contractors for a year or 2. Now she works with a very very large construction company who have a lot to do with retail and shopping centres, she does site walk arounds 2-3+ times a day and is very hands on and is in constant communication with most of the 1500 workers on site.

Just takes time, you dont get a top paying job thats great fun for you straight away.

Was an MD for many years, retired early and went into full time safety as a consultant, loved it! Money was good as well. Got employed last year as a HSEQ Director, job is varied and always rewarding, money is great as well.

Nothing much else to add other than it will be what I do until I retire in 13 years; I hope it never arrives, I enjoy what I do toooo much!

Anders, sorry for my last post it was just my attempt at humour.

I actually enjoy what I'm doing, apart from the paperwork.

Andrew as to my selection

1 - Professional footballer - My hobby and I would love to be paid millions for having so much fun
2 - Member of the leading political party - when your term is over you get a great pension and can spend your free time writing your biography
3 - HRH – I just like the house
4 - Top Gear Presenter – I actually only meant the long haired ones
5 - Singer/member of rock group – I don't know why this was on my list

I wish I had my time over again! I would have moved into H&S a lot sooner. I find it a fascinating subject and so varied. It is only one of the roles I cover at the moment as GM but I would love to be able dedicate all my time to it.

Still I may be able to do that later as I am still taking exams even at 54 NVQ 4 although finding it tough going!

Stick with it I am sure you have entered a profession at a time when it is moving rapidly up the ladder of recognition. As others have said this profession is so varied you should be able to find the role you are looking for.
