If IOSH is serious about it's future it might be worth sending the survey to those Technician members who have not bothered to renew thier subscriptions this year in protest over the recent membership changes.

It may not paint a rosy picture but would certainly give some food for thought...

Hi Bret

I know I am stating the obvious but if they have not renewed their subscriptions, they are no longer members, then why should they have a say in how the Institute is run ?. The institute provides a service for its members, opting out and going elsewhere is a personnel choice, but once made they should not look over their shoulder and still want an input, (my view only).

Agree with you on that; having so said, might it have some benefit to know exactly why they moved on? I know we know why in the main, but it may be useful to have documented responses.

We do undertake an exit survey and record why members resign when they contact us. We are currently calling those members who have as yet not renewed their subscriptions and talking to them as well so we are recording data all the time. In the next few weeks all these people will be sent an exit questionnaire as well.
In actual fact the attrition rate for members is the lowest we have ever had (less tha 5%)even bearing in mind that members are still paying up!
The biggest reason we lose members is simply because we lose touch with them. They move on and we are unable to contact them at the addresses we have for them. In the new year we will be opening the MyIOSH portal so that details cvan be changed on line, hopefully this will enable us to keep our data more current!

Good answer again Hazel.

I noticed that the original announcement from Sima Patel was a locked thread. Thus it will rapidly fall off the front page and only be read by those who sign-on today.

I wanted to ensure that there would again be an "opt out" box as I do not want my details supplied to third parties or "partners"

?

Hi Merv,

These threads do move down fast but you'll see we'll keep popping this one back at the top as often as it needs.

The member survey is a lot more than an email, it’s an essential part of our communications with members. That’s why we see it as a membership communication and essential rather than a promotional email where you would have an opt out from further emails.

It’s important we ask you for feedback, it’s good practice, and at the same time it gives as many members as possible an opportunity to give us their opinions – if you and they choose to. You have the choice and it's anonymous.

The survey itself is being carried out for IOSH by the Professional Associations Research Network – IOSH is a member of the network – and PARN won’t retain your data. That message is also on the email being sent on Monday.

Best regards,

Angela Wheatcroft

Angela,

thanks. I have received the link and will be going to it tomorrow.

I was just a bit worried that an important thread would drop off the bottom if no responses could be sent.

Will the results of the survey be available to members or will we see an edited version?

All,

I've just gone through the survey and I think it is pretty good.

Except that it assumes that you are a member of a specialist group and go to branch meetings.

As I am neither, I think, I couldn't respond to about 25% of the questions.

I liked the bit at the end which asked for volunteers. I thought all that stuff was done through the old boys network. Perhaps they are running our of old boys and/or girls.

In addition to the expected "digest" in SHP of the results I would like an eventual link to the full report. As presented to the committee.

Overall I think it is a good survey which will help IOSH to improve it's services to members.

Well done PRAP (?)

Hi

I think there are some good opportunities in the survey to raise concerns and give credit where it is due.

I would recommend that everyone who can complete this survey does so, as it is the main route that all our views can be heard.

My first impressions of the survey were that it was badly designed for the page. It required a lot of scrolling to see the full text of each statement in some of the questions and then across to the appropriate column. The use of the NEUTRL response was very tempting to avoid strain on the finger and scroll wheel.

Also it actually gave no real space to respond to some of the issues that may well concern people - those of committee work and their effectiveness and the responsiveness of HQ staff. In some places members are made to feel as if they are interfering with other more important things. Other sections of HQ staff are a pleasure to talk to and spend endless time in assistance.

Anyone reading my responses might get a bit down-hearted because of the nature of the questions, I think.

There is a massive hole in the survey "Have you had direct contact with IOSH?" and the associated questions.

If you want to know how others think of you, try 360 degree feedback (ask all those you interact with about all aspects).

Merv's point about Branch and Specialists is a good one, and a "Do you?" Y/N question to filter might have been good.

I like ISOH and will continue to be a member, but I want to see the status change from milk monitors to head pupil.

Hazel,
You say members move on and lose contact. Surely if they valued their membership they would advise you of their new contact details etc!

Just filled in the survey and thought that it was very good. I can understand some of the more negative comments regarding the survey, but that is the thing about surveys - you will never please everybody. I'm not having a swipe at any one here, just stating that the survey was like a breath of fresh air to me and I hope that all our members complete the survey. If you have a gripe about the services provided by IOSH then this survey will give you a chance to state your case. Indeed I encourage people to be honest in this survey in order to help IOSH improve.

Go on fill it in, we will all be the winners if it helps IOSH make even the smallest improvement.

Mart,
They often do when they remember but sometimes this can be after a considerable time. Realistically when a person moves letting their professional body know is probably not one of their highest priorities!
We have spoken to people who think they have left it too long to contact us about paying their subscription and are happy to pay their subs when we contact them. Any former members of IOSH are welcome back but it has to be borne in mind that you come back to the same level if it is within 2 years of lapsing but after that you will be reassessed for a membership category under the terms that are operating at the time.
We have introduced a membership retention programme for the first time this year so I'll let you know how it goes.
