Good afternoon ladles and jellyspoons

The MSDS does provide some basis for the answers but not in the detail required ie. store in a cool well ventilated area. Obviously I would prefer storage in a shaded spot. Suitable extinguishing media Foam, CO2, Dry Powder and Water Mist

I have been asked the following questions regarding the bulk storage of a flammable (not highly flammable) liquid in Saudi. Issues include that the FP is >50 Deg C, the ambient temperature is around 45 Deg C but in sunlight obviously this can be higher. It is a petroleum product and therefore the limits under COMAH would be 2500 tons/2.500.000 litres (lower) and 25,000 tons upper. Given we supply around 2.000.000 litres a year I do not expect the storage to be over this. Though it would be stored outside I expect some aspects of DSEAR will also apply.

However the questions I am trying to answer at the moment are

1. What type of fire-fighting is recommended for bulk storage tanks? For foam firefighting – type of foam (AFFF or FP), would 3% concentration adequate?

2. Any recommendation for the type of tanks, tank spacing & bund requirements, sheds, relevant international standards & practices for bulk storage, NFPA etc.

3. Other safety precautions recommended for bulk storage.

4. Reference installations for bulk storage of above chemicals in oil & gas industry preferably in the Middle East, GCC countries etc...

I have mentioned that floating roofs of large storage tanks would be preferable if a tank system was being used to prevent build up of flammable vapours etc.

Can any one point me in the right direction for researching further solutions. Im currently awaiting a copy of HSG176. This is not a site I have responsibility for but that of a customer.

Would be much appreciated

Sorry for the excess of details, just I know if I leave something out some one will ask for it

Thanks

Des

HSE publishes some excellent guidance on storing and handling flammable liquids. eg ISBN 0717609677 Safe use and handling of flammable liquids. 0717614719 Storage of flammable liquids in containers.
0717614700 Storage of flammable liquids in tanks.

And so on. I am not being funny but unless you are an expert in this field how can you advise?

Descarte,

You may want to check the Federal and Municipal laws of Saudi in case they have specific requirements for this.

Apologies if you have already done this.
