I've been thinking.......just wanted to throw something out into the forum - if IOSH or another similar safety, health or environmental organisation were to produce topical podcasts regarding forthcoming legislation, risk averse topics, or even study support bitesize revision bits all the kinds of things we discuss would anyone subscribe?

It might sound like a craxy idea but I am interested in the general consensus.. ?!

You must be joking!

It has taken them long enough to get a spell checker on this forum, and get round to sorting it so you can see what you are typing in a reply.

I think IOSH Podcasts are a long way off.

i think its a great idea, i've suggested it to HSE and they are thinking of doing something with it too - perhaps an innovative consultancy might also get ahead of the game and develop these

BOHS have started doing what they call webinars; Chris Packham has been involved and is enthusiastic about the concept. See www.bohs.org for details.

As Paul has stated, BOHS has started to provide Webinars. These are short seminars, usually of about one hour, held over the Internet. Basically, participants pay to take part in both a conference call and visual presentation on their own computer via the Internet. The benefits are:-
a) No-one has to travel. It is even possible for those overseas to take part, as all it will cost them, in addition to the normal charge, is the cost of the international part of their telephone call.
b) There is no need to organise venue etc., so costs can be kept low.
c) The organisation is simple and Webinars can be put on at short notice, enabling an organisation to respond to a topical issue.

There are some limitations to the way in which the visual part is formatted.

If anyone would like to know more about this just contact me direct (chris.packham@enviroderm.co.uk or 01386 832 311)

On a similar line, does any one know of any H&S news blogs (not those that just list the NEBOSH syllabus).

I have found a site that has daily news feeds from the HSE and EU (OSHU) but not quite what I'm looking for.

I took part in web-based meetings some years ago when as a company we decided that travelling for meetings was bad (ie expensive) and tried to use our intranet for these.

Mixed experiences. The benfits were clearly there - no M6/M1 haul, no Virgin Rail horrors, avoiding Heathrow etc plus the meetings took 1 hour or so thus freeing the rest of the day to get some work done.

Downsides were less discussion on issues, occasional technology failures and a very sore ear from holding the phone there for so long. Also it was easier to drift off to somewhere nice but no fun to be dragged back by someone expecting an intelligent comment or answer!

My preference is still for a face to face meeting but I can see that the technique is very useful for disseminating information.

Would I "do one"? If the subject matter interested me, probably.
