Posted By Frank Hallett As an FSB Member, I am aware that the Federation of Small Business is seeking views from any affected or interested party about the current [and future] ability of a Fire Authority to set up as a commercial venture and provide services in the same way as conventional commercial traders. If any of you out there are sufficiently perceptive to have a view on this - by all means respond to this posting - but please ensure that you also send your comments and views direct to Rosina Robson, in the FSB national policy team at rosina.robson@fsb.org.uk by 4 January 2007. The final date for responses to the DCLG consultation is 10 January 2007. Enjoy Frank Hallett

Posted By Christopher Frank I don't know what type of commercial services they will be promoting. However, my concern would be that as in the NHS CFSMS, they will be determining the standards that all other providers may have to follow. Is there a possibility that all trainers will have to undertake their training courses first? Having had to assess training delivered by a Trainer who had been on a NHSCFSMS course before delivering the training to NHS staff, I would be personnally concerned if they were to find themselves with a dictate for training courses within their area. Is there a possibility for a conflict of interest?

Posted By Chris Ivan haven't Essex and other Fire services been doing this for 5+ years, eg their promotion of the online generic fire risk assessment Firesmart?

Posted By Steve Cartwright Some fire services have been running commercial services for years. A few years ago I went on a fire extinguisher maintenance course run by County Durham fire service. Very interesting and dispelled some of the myths regarding fire extinguishers. The food was great as well. Why do they want to know?
