Is it just me or does anyone else get sick of work colleagues trying to be funny by saying things like "You should do a health & safety assessment on this! or that!" when you go out for a company meal or similar?

I laugh politely but inside I am thinking sarcastically, ha ha very funny.

I do have a life outside of work - my family, hobbies, socialising, interests etc etc. Yet, people at work seem to think that health & safety is all that I live for and think about. Arhhrr........ (rant over!)

If it stresses you that much maybe you should do a risk assessment

My hobbies are F1 and sword fighting (though never at the same time yet...)

Funnily enough my workmates don't seem to try to make fun of those. And I tend to avoid going to dinner with workmates.

Perhaps I'm a bit blunt, but I have previously used really funny one-liners like "Grow up!" (Well it always sounded funny in my head...)

Just take it as a compliment that your colleagues think you are that evangelical about health and safety, Zaph - at least they are still prepared to eat with you.

Why not next time just ask them what they think of the Ambulance Service. The answer I am sure will be they do a great job and they are very well respected by the public. Which is my own opinion as well.

Then ask why they feel people should have to be injured before a persons role in safety is recognised. Is it not far better to avoid a major accident, rather than have to deal with the tragedies after it?

I get it all the time, and from colleages too, I'm sad to say. It is a cross we will just have to bear.

Next time just add the line," I am glad you are able to join us this evening, all those assessments were obviously worth it. Now one final assessment, how likely are you to suffer from a violent attack if you continue to take the .." You get the picture I am sure.

My stock answer to that is that I deal with WORKPLACE H&S. Outside work I will continue to scramble up hills and over ridges without worrying about working at height.

I like to look puzzled for a moment and then smile and say "Oh, I've never heard that one before, very funny."

Try treating the question as an opportunity to confirm their understanding. As the 'trainer', you may not be the 'right' person to answer the question. Ask the them
- what the hazards are (at the hotel, it's often the food, electrics or fire arrangements).
- who else is at risk (children, expectant mums, elderly, infirm, drunkards?)
- what controls are already in place (policy, assessments, Local Authority inspection and licencing)
- what else do they think could be done?
- how much do they think it will cost?
- do they think it's a high risk or a low one?

If you get this far, get another round from the bar - you deserve it! Inform the hotel staff of the issues and ask them to report their findings back to you.

It is an occupational hazard, but at least others recognise that you may be more "aware" of the things around you i.e. hotel / restaurant / new location - you know how to get out.

You should take it in your stride, it goes with the territory.

In work I do advise people that there are risky things and try to advise them what could go wrong - I try to get them to say it - i.e. what is the worse that could happen to you.

I do no attempt to stop work - unless it is serious, but get individuals to take responsibility themselves, it they accept it my I often would comment along the lines of there a risk assessment. They have possible by in - so next time when somewhere - i can remind them of it?

Does not always work though!

I guess I'm lucky, this sort of banter doesn't bother me at all, it's an opportunity to laugh, smile, communicate, connect with others, reply with a joke, stay cool - life's too short.

My answer is that I already have done the risk assessment!

I don't know about anybody else but I always look at fire extinguishers and exit signs wherever I go - I just can't help it. (At least I will be better prepared than others who don't).

I ate at a chinese restaurant the other evening and noted a table and chairs blocking the fire exit. I didn't make a fuss but did make plans in my head to evacuate if the need arose.

There is always one who has to put in their "you need to risk assess that" wherever I go, even if it is not work related - heck it even happens at work when it has nothing to do with me! Anyway my usual reply is something like "Why?" then they say "your health and safety" to which I say "so you are not responsible for your own safety then?" Silence, or if they are keen to go on I usually start pointing out their legal obligations etc. After 30 secs, they give up and go away.

However if it is serious, I would never ignore it...

Agree with you. I have just been asked to assess a reclining chair !!

Think "we" (as in collective term for the government, media, public etc.) have ourselves to blame as most people are now litigation conscious/adverse and a lot of people assume you need to be a health and safety practitioner to do a risk assessment!!

We need to educate people to get them to recognise that we all do risk assessments in our heads all the time (some are better at it than others though) and the vast majority of incidents do not result in litigation which cannot be defended with simple safeguards.

Rant over !!

May we all have a happier and safer 2007 !!

My sir name is Warburton also, so you can imagine the potential available for wise cracks, I'd just get used to it mate. :)

Zaphod,

I will advice you to be patient as i have faced with the same story at work. My workmates used to joy over me saying that i probably installed seat belt on my bed not to fall from.

I work as HSE Coordinator.

So. Otherwise we need to go to stress management courses:)
