CONFINED SPACE ENTRY - NO NEED FOR A STANDBYMAN?
Rank: Guest
|
Posted By garyh I believe that for a confined space entry there should always be a "standbyman" present.
(I am talking about in an industrial setting, eg a tank, boiler and so on).
However, some organisations do not agree. I think this is wrong and that in fact a "standbyman" should be mandatory.

Posted By Merv Newman Thank you Gary for that provocative "discuss"
Actually I won't "discuss" I will just jump up and down on whoever suggests that confined space entry does not require a standby person.
I won't go much into the definition of a CS but it includes difficult entry/exit, not a normal working space and the possibility of life threatening conditions existing or occurring.
I'm not going in there before there is someone properly equipped and ready to pull me out !

Posted By GSP Confined spaces regs 97 are quite clear on this and the HSE 'safe work in confined spaces' documents is good as well but misleading http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg258.pdfBut yes you should, generally entering a confined space is a 3 man job. 1 to enter, 1 to communicate and and 1 to supervise/contact emergency services/on site rescue team.

Posted By Brian John Abbs Gary I fully agree with Merv. It may not be stated in the regs, but is definitely a standard risk control associated with CS working.
In my current organisation, no person my enter confined space without a "top man".
