Posted By bob the builda Hi all The fire doors have the exit signs placed half way up the doors and after much searching I have not been able to find the rule as to what height these signs need to be.

Posted By TBC The signs should ideally be above the door and also anywhere near so that as you view or approach from various angles you will see clearly where the 'Fire Exit' is. If you only have the sign on the door - once opened it disappears. They should also be up-to-date with the running man on them. It would also help if they were meaningful as intended. Size also matters and most companies websites that sell the signs can advise. Regards

Posted By shaun mckeever the recommended height for fire exit signs is between 2 and 2.5m but I think so long as they can be clearly seen I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Posted By martin gray1 Hi Bob The advise given by TBC is good advise but could I just add a couple of points. If the fire exit is along a corridor then you would also need to consider a hanging sign so you could see it on your approach. This must have a minimum height clearance of 2300mm if this is not possible then consider floor marking. I like yourself cannot find a standard height setting for the wall mounted signs. This may have something to do with minimum ceiling heights. We also need to consider wheel chair users and people with sight impairments. The above are just a personal view I am no expert in this field, however I am sure you will get lots of very good advise. MG

Posted By Andy Brazier There is a school of thought that fire exit signs should be at floor level so that they can be seen in a smoke filled room. I have seen this done offshore, although high level signs will also be useful for general knowledge and awareness (i.e. so people know where they are before there is a fire)

Posted By Ashley Wood Wall mounted fire exit directional signs should be mounted as follows; 1700mm at base of sign to floor as a minimum. 2000mm at top edge of sign from floor maximum. Fire Exit Signs mounted on walls above doors should be between 2000mm & 2500mm from floor to top edge of sign. The above is detailed in BS5499 Pt's 4 & 5 and within the RR(FS)O. Ashley
