Posted By Jason911 If you have an area which is considered hazardous because of workplace transport in the form of fork lifts operating, is it not permittable to have a temporary and totally removable barrier restricting its access to pedestrians for example?
Thanks

Posted By J Knight Are you talking about temporarily blocking a fire exit here? I don't think this is a good idea unless it is absolutely utterly necessary. Consider the kind of panic that might ensue if a really hostile fire broke out, and think about how easy your barrier might be to remove under the pressure of a real emergency,

Posted By Jason911 I am only talking about a plastic 3ft high collapsible barrier to segregate the area that would take approximately 3 seconds to remove but clearly demonstrates the the area is a no go one, and other fire exits exist in a very close proximity.

Posted By Alan Nicholls Hi Jason Would I be correct in saying people use the fire door for access and egress from the building, during normal working hours? Alan N

Posted By Jason911 Hi Alan,
No, only used for that purpose out of hours at which time the barrier is always removed to allow forklifts onto shop floor, so no way it can be forgotten about and left in place.

Posted By Alan Nicholls Hi Jason Is the area inside the Fire Door classed as a walkway or traffic route? Is the said area big enough or wide enough to allow you to segregate traffic from people? How many Fire Exits, distance of travel to reach a Fire Exit, number of employees working in the area. Answers to these questions would assist. Have you tried an emergency evac, recently? If NO. Do you have results from a previous evac, Try one with this Fire Exit blocked off. Compare the results. You may find there is less of a problem than you think. Don't know if this will help.
If you would like to discuss email direct.
