Posted By David Milanovic Hi We just had new science work isles (small worktop with a sink, taps and that sort of thing) put in in our school. These isles are quite small. However our contractor managed to squeeze on 2 water taps, two gas taps and a pair of electric sockets. There’s no more than 20cm distance between them. Is this safe? Is there any law regulating this? Or any precautions I should know about? Any advice welcomed!

Posted By Ken Taylor Not unusual - but does present safe use and supervision issues. If your school belongs to CLEAPSS Schools Science Service, you could talk to them or use their Laboratory Handbook and guides. Do you have access to a Science Advisor?

Posted By Alan Nicholls From the CLEAPSS guide to Designing and Planning Laboratories
Labs should have 2 separate ring mains 1 for students the other for cleaners etc RCD protected with key operated isolation switch with visible indicator light visible from anywhere in the lab. Positioned by the teachers desk. Electrical sockets should be as far as possible from water taps, to minimise the risk of splashing, taps must not swivel. location of sockets, it should not be possible for water to drip into sockets.
Hope this helps Alan N
