Posted By James Midlake All Recently had an engineer cut himself with a Stanley Knife when stripping insulation from cable. This was heavy duty cable - 4 or 5 inches in diameter. I did a quick Google looking for heavy duty strippers but could find nothing which seemed suitable. Any ideas? Or are we stuck with the old stanley knife method? Midlake

Posted By Jim Walker James, I've seen a tool that looks like a big version of a plumbers pipe cutter used for this. Can't help further though

Posted By Catman Hi Midlake Some electrical companies have compeltely banned the use of stanley knives for this application. Accidents have occurred when the stanley blade breaks whilst under high strain cutting the insulation, the broken egde slips and is likely to cause a serious and deep cut. The alternatives were also knives but much better suited to the task, try RS components as that is where alternatives were sourced. Stanley knives are convenient but certainly not the suitable tool in this case. Please send me an email if you have any problems sourcing a suitable alternative and i'll get the name of what we used. Cheers TW

Posted By Makka A Stanley knife is not the appropriate tool for stripping cables, besides the risk to the individual there is also the possibility of catching the insulation on the conductors potentially creating the risk of short circuits and fires. A wide variety of cable stripping tools for most applications are available. As an example take a look at the RS web site "www.rswww.com" and search for cable strippers, you will find a multitude for various uses.

Posted By David Robb we used to use a junior hacksaw for SWA (steel wire armoured)cable, simply cut through to the earth screening around the circumference and then at 90 degrees and peel off the sleeve. no use for longer terminations though.
