I have just been asked the following question, and without research I cannot answer. Thought perhaps someone here might know the answer?!

What legislation dictates the requirement etc of handrails?

The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations are the regs you want.

Also the working at height regs - covers the height of handrails.

The Building Regulations and the Disability Discrimination Act both have something to say also.

The first about height and number of handrails in relation to the width of stairways and the second about the diameter and material used (if external).
