Posted By Steve Hickey Can anyone tell me if there are any restrictions on how far away from a existing railway track, fence line a building can be constructed. Also when carrying out any work using plant or equipment, do we have to get permission from anyone. We are in the process of building a new housing development with a existing railway running adjacent to the site.
Many Thanks

Yes there are and I have personal experience of what can happen when this is not considered, i.e. embankment collapse!
You need to speak with someone at Network Rail, probably on the structures/thirdy party engineering side.
I can help if you want to email direct.

Posted By Alan Haynes You need to talk to the 'Outside Parties' people of Network Rail, who deal with your area, who will advise you of what you can and can't do.
If you look at the Network Rail website it should give you an indication of which Office you need to talk to [depends on where in the country you are], along with a general phone number to make initial contact.

It is usually 'Corus' who handle the safety aspects for Network Rail, particularly working alongside or next to a railway.
I have recently been involved with putting up a 45m high unit next to a main railway line.
We involved Network Rail early and made sure they were consulted at all times, it needs to be this way as they do have certain powers to restrict types of work next to the railway if they are notsatisfied with your arrangements, particularly with cranes, lifting equipment and excavations.
They (Netwrok Rial / Corus) have a document which details the requirements for working next to a railway, drop me an e-mail for a chat if you want.
