Posted By David Kennedy I am looking for hard data on fire incidents in which somebody actually used a portable extinguisher to put out a fire, or to aid escape, and anything else that supports a decision to provide a fire extinguisher in a workplace. Any such information or comments on the value of portable extinguishers would be most welcome.

Posted By Nadine Hodgson In the construction industry we have had some incidents where extinguishers have been used to put out smouldering caused by hot works. We have also had some incidents where smouldering was not detected and the entire building burnt down. I do not have statistics though. The main point to consider that under the general fire precautions legislation there is a duty to provide an appropriate number, as well as type of extinguishers. This would be identified within the fire risk assessment.
