Traditionally stairwell ladders and a scaffold planks have been used to carry out painting and plastering work and a new way of doing this work is being sought.

There are a lot of deck working platform type of setup's which are designed for this environment.

However, I have a couple of questions regarding these systems.

A lot of them have guardrails at either end, i.e. the part of the platform at the top and bottom of the stairwell, however, none at the side.

Is this acceptable if the system runs fairly flush with the side walls and there isn't a chance someone can fall through a gap?

Also, if anyone has any other suggestions of access stations we would be most greatful!

Thanks

On the face of it I would say yes because the gaurd rails are intended to prevent a fall at an exposed point. If the side walls are are flush with the platform and the system is stable to prevent gaps developing then that would be ok.

If the platform is moved to another location ensure a further assessment is made to identify any new risks at that location.

I could recommend the product supplied in the link pasted below.
It is an excellent product and well used by a large national housebuilder that I used to work for.
