Hi All

I'm looking for solutions and advice. We have been commissioned to install a double steel doorset on the first floor of a building. The Overpanel of the door is to house a hoist transporting plant into the room and the door is inward opening.

Whilst our installations take place from the inside, this scenario is new, in so far as its on the first floor and roughly 5/6m up.

Externally there is nothing installed in the way of exits, platforms etc - 5/6m drop to ground. Also situated quite close to the area is perimeter fencing steel palisade style.

The ground is slightly sloping (gradient unknown at the moment).

Can you please advise best edge protection, fall prevention methods and ideas for us to ensure installation engineers safety. Would a scaffold have to be in place externally?

Many Thanks
Kelly

Kelly,

Some form of fall prevention/protection system must be used, as must protection of the area below the installation. A scaffold would be ideal, but fall arresters and harness should be sufficient.

As an aside, if there is nothing outside this door, how will falls from it be prevented when in use? Will there be a landing platform of similar for the completed installation? If so, do your installation when that is in place, if not someone should be taking the designers outside for a thorough birching!

I agree with the previous, depending on what order the works are planned and your methodology, consider using MEWPs.

yep I would go for that, harness with inertia reel clipped to a secure internal point.

When the fitters / installers have left it would be the responsibility of the occupiers to assess the risk for this area.

Kelly,if your men need to stand outwith the building then a scaffold would be ideal .It would take approx two hours to erect.Another solution is a system hand-rail named K-Guard, which features 20mm Hilti bolts with a socket fixed along the edge of the opening then whatever leng of protection fence needed. After the job is complete the holes can be filled which leave no noticable marks.
