Would like any help or guidance regarding completing a suitable course.
I have come across various different courses from 1 day courses to 4 day etc.
Would like to complete a course which would lead to a professional recognised qualification etc if possible.
Willing to travel in uk to complete, so venue no problems.
Can anyone recommended a course. Come across a course which will allow IIAI LAIC (MIIAI) institute of industrial accident investigators?

Posted By Salus Hi Gary,
you just need to ascertain, what happened / where / when / what were people involved doing at the time / how it happened / why it happened / interview persons involved, just write down the facts as they state them / any plant or equipment or substances involved /
you have got to build up a picture of what the causes were.
this could be a piece of equipment failed because of lack of maintenance, bad procedures / when broken nobody to report to / no one has responsibility for the equipment / no asset register, these sort of things lead to the causes of an accident.
Loads of info and guidance about if you have a go at this on your own you will gain a lot more experience than you would if you attend a course and you may identify where your company is failing and write up a procedure to reduce the chances of it happening again.
Go on Go on Go on.

Posted By Pat Hannaway Hi Gary, you could consider buying a copy of the HSE publication (£9.50). HSG 245 - Investigating Accidents and Incidents. It contains a wealth of useful information and guidance. A lot cheaper than a formal training course.

Posted By Ian G Hutchings Hi Gary
As robust accident and incident investigation is so critical to preventing injuries, I would recommend some formal training. It should be very practical as well as just the classroom theory. I know there are some good options where they run simulation incidents for people to investigate.
Like anything I don't think you can get it all from a text book. It comes back once more to the question of competence; and depends on the level of risk of the business you are in.
Good luck
Ian

I did the Kelvin TOPSET course, very good, good materials, good support after the course. A few 'war stories' come in but it makes the course memorable.

Posted By Ian Langston Hi Gary,
I think that there are some vacancies on the IOSH course in May give Zoe in Professional Development a ring on 01162573100 to check.
Accident investigation is a very involved subject and requires both a knowledge of the current law in relation to evidence gathering as well as causal analysis. Be very careful when choosing a course, many appear to be in depth but miss the mark. If you need more detailed advice drop me a line.
Best wishes,
Ian Langston, Course tutor IOSH Accident Investigation Course

Posted By Jim Walker Gary (and anyone else),
I did Ian's course at IOSH a while back.
Without a doubt, it was the best course I've been on in 20 years of H&S courses.
