Posted By rks As a company we have just started doing the IOSH working safely to conform with a contractural obligation in respect to safety passports.
Other contractors who work on this contract do not bother going down this route and just do CSCS and a NVQ 2 which is industry specific.
After doing the courses and trying to keep the operatives awake for the day and the thought that I am going to do these courses for the next 6-12 months I am beginning to think that as a company we would be better off going down the CSCS route as well.
The course content is very basic and at times it is hard to keep the people in the class interested.
Has anybody else bothered to go down this route and if so how are finding doing the course?

Posted By Mike Miller Hi Bud We are a major construcion company and have decided to do the IOSH managing safely as opposed to the CSCS. IOSH 4 days and Bobs ya uncle! it takes 3 months to get your card from CSCS! All those in the company with CSCS will be phased out within the next 2 years.
good luck and I think you have made a good choice.

Arguments for and against
cscs or citb have (messed in their own tent)by having a half baked accreditation system which has been a bit of a money spinner for them in the past.
They will undoubtedly still have the monopoly on CPCS or plant cards - may cost a bit more in the future as they have to replace lost revenue
You will also find that old die hards like the MCG stipulating that if you hvent got teh cscs card your not comming in vice versa with IOSH lovers The card wallet will be around for a long time yet, particularly with Utility skills on the prowl too for Electric gas and water

Posted By Malcolm Greenhouse I am interested in your negative comments about the IOSH working safely course. Was it the course content that you found at fault or the delivery of the course?

Posted By rks Mal,
It was a bit of both.
The course content is a bit basic to say the least and I can't think that any of the operatives who attended the course went away with any greater knowledge than when they entered the room.
All in all it is not, in my opinion, going to have an impact out on site.

Posted By JPK Mike,
You say you have chosen the route for IOSH Managing safely! Surely you dont expect site operatives to take a management course?!?!
The CSCS is for site operatives not managers, as is the IOSH WORKING safely.
I have 6 guys trained to SMSTS level and IOSH managing safely, but chose the CSCS route for the guys on site, simply because it is construction industry specific, unlike the IOSH WORKING safely course.
CSCS would be my choice for the construction industry any day!

Posted By JPK To add to my above statement.......
4 planning supervisors we carry out works for, DO NOT recognise the IOSH working safely course as sufficent training for construction industry operatives!
Just something to bear in mind ;)
