Posted By Mark Eastbourne As a matter of interest, I am going to post a list of Health and Safety Urban legends, the tales of H&S gone awry which everyone knows but which are not true, on another site and would be interested if anyone has any I can add to my list.
So far I have:
The motor home cruise control.
Ladders are banned.
McDonalds hot coffee spiling on lap.
Bonkers conkers.
Trapeze artists having to wear hard hats!
More red ape and regulations than ever before nowadays.
Small businesses over inspected.
Can anyone offer any more tales!?
Many thanks,
Mark

Posted By John Allen Mark, You should check out any of the Urban Myth and Legend sites on the internet; www.snopes.com is a good place to start. Also check out the TUC website for 10 Myths about H&S (also several half truths as well). Incidentally the McDonalds’ coffee story is true, just very much distorted in the telling so that it’s made to sound like a fraudulent compensation claim. And of course don’t forget the biggest myth of all – that we have a compensation culture here in Britain. Lots of info also on the TUC site. Good luck – also glad to welcome another myth buster to the fold. PS has anyone come across the hand sanitizer story recently?

Posted By Mark Eastbourne Hi John, Robert and Salus
Many thanks for your replies and for being directed to various sources of useful information. I must confess I was startled to hear that the McDonalds coffee spilling incident was true! I honestly thought this was a myth!
All the best,
Mark

Posted By Mark Eastbourne I have also been given this link to the Stella Awards site which \I thought might be useful on this thread.
Andy,
Many thanks for the website you provided, I found your presentation very enlightening and interesting. I did not know it was you that wrote it, I thought to myself, "This Andy Brazier fella has done a good job!" then noticed your forum name!
Thanks you once again and I have saved the website as one of my favourites!
All the best,
Mark

Posted By Mike I believe the woman involved was sitting in her car, unable to move fast when the near boiling coffee pooled in her groin area and scalded. McDonalds are supposed to have changed their procedure. I don't know whether they actually have in the UK. I don't go to McDonalds.
