hi all
anyone know where i could source small metal tags for putting on eye bolts,shackles etc.
all lifting equipment is supposed to have a unique id,but they never come with one.

You would be better going for the engraving kit as tags will almost always come off, especially when it comes to shackles.
What you are best with is having a register of all the equipment and every item then has its own unique id number, and also use a blotch of paint to show the correct colour code.

Umm, i will watch this closely as i have the same problem with shackles. We have had to weld a little plate onto the to of the shackle, but it can get in the way a bit.

i don't think you are allowed to weld plates on,the heat would affect the properties of the materials they are made up of.
thought of the engraving or stamping option,just means alot of it.
sore hands,ouch!!!!!

You may well be right, but they have passesd inspection, and I couldnt find anything in LOLER. But yeah, good point, this is why i need a better solution.

Do you do your own checks or do you employ an outside contractor?
If you use an outside contractor, get him/her to produce tagging for all equipment used.
This will provide a solution, not expensive, less hassle for you. T's crossed i's dotted, everybody happy.(Except the boss cos he has the bill to pay)

I had been told in the past that as shackles, eyebolts etc were lifting accessories as opposed to lifting equipment (beats me!) they could be recorded under their batches as per original cert from suppliers. The batch number is often on the shackle already next to WLL/SWL. May be worth checking this is correct.
I have seen shackles with cable ties of different colours to identify the year/cycle in which they were last tested. Spray paint similarly.
Equipment suppliers can produce permanent tags and is your best bet but they do tend to suffer under heavy wear and break off. So visualy inspect before each use.
Engraving, stamping and welding to the shackle apparently affects the physical properties and may weaken it. An test engineer failed a lot of a colleagues equipment for this very reason and he had to replace with new.
Also welding may give sharp edges and if using soft slings can cut them.

all shackles will need there unique i.d number you will not be able to use the batch number, the best to do is get an engraving gun and allocate your own id number to the shackle and engrave it just after the swl
when you buy shackles 99% of companies will hard stamp an id number on to the shackle for you (you will have to supply this)

Just to confirm why a shackle is classed a lifting accessory, it is because it does not do the lifting, a chainblock, pull lift, or crane would be classed as lifting equipment as it does the lifting.

If you have a lifting register set up it is entirely possible to specify on a Purchase Order what asset number you want stamped into new items before they are even delivered. This is particularly effective for eye bolts, shackles and the like. Suppliers seem quite happy to do this because it enhances their "relationship" with the customer. Another one that has worked for me is to use the type of tag that farmers put in cows ears. They are very durable and last a year between inspections without any problems. They are good on strops.
