Hi all

We are in the process of planning the addition of a training / conference room holding a maximum of 80 people to our visitor attraction which is a marine vessel. The room shall be a new structure.

There are three existing external stairwells to exit this area.

The existing stairwells are of wooden construction which we are already considering changing to alluminium chequered plate with additional lighting etc.

Although we are not under building regulations as we are a boat, (i think) we want to follow best practice or any relevant legislation for this means of escape.

The stairs are certainly wide enough but there is an issue of the sloping angle and step height which to the eye looks a little steep.

Can anyone please offer advice or point me in the direction to the required legislation, best practice for a boat or not concerning stairs as a means of escape (pitch, step height etc).

Any help would be greatly appreciated

or you could try BS 5395-1:2000 if you have access to that standard.
