The FIA govern certain motorsports, but not record attempts. I believe the stipulation of opposing runs comes from the record people (presumably GBWR).

With Guinness's sensible approach to safety, I doubt they prohibit safety checks and necessary replacements ... it would not be good to gain a reputation for record breakers to keep having accidents.

Later on in this programme the road resurfacing item was particularly enlightening.

Whilst Mr Clarkson was having a 'elf and safety' gone mad rant saying that it was all a waste of time, was he wearing a hard hat and a hi vis jacket?

Perhaps he is being converted to the cause?

Great program, very entertaining.
A few points of interest;

Its a jet car -not a rocket car

It was built before 1980

It does not race at sanctioned tracks in the UK

The current record 334 mph in 5+ seconds set at Santa pod in 2005, by a jet engined car-I was there.

Top fuel dragsters are MUCH faster, average times in side by side competition; 320 mph in 4.7 seconds. 6000bhp

In my opinion this vintage jet car should have been in a museum, not run 5+ times at a disused airfield by an inexperienced "celebrity"
If the Hamster wants to take the risks..its up to him.

Answer to Dave Brede;
At Santa Pod the track is checked after every Top Fuel/jet car has run, also the tarmac is vastly different ,the track is meticulously prepared cleaned -dragged with rubber compound and finally sprayed with trackbite, a kind of glue, very sticky ie would pull your trainer off if you walked across it! I have raced there many times and can tell you it is unlike any other tarmac. Designed for the job.

I know the H&S adviser for top gear -yes they do have one and he is a very capable and thick skinned adviser. Remember this is a TV programme and you only see what they want you to see - you will also agree I'm sure that actions speak louder than words and that whatever clarkson says you will always see him wearing protective equipment - e.g. the hi-vis etc in the road works. Oh and how do you know what training went on before they were allowed to drive the machines.
Face it safety isn't fashionable and it doesn't make good telly - get over it - we are not in this business to be popular.

Your right about not seing behind the scenes.

On that weeks Contract Journal, on the front cover there is a small article about the road works which states it didnt show them 'confusing the locals with diversions, driving the planer into a truck and dumping chippings in a gateway'.

They dont just upset the H&S industry but the construction industry too.

You have to laugh though, dont you?
