The person chosen last night to play on Deal or No Deal worked as a community safety officer and when he clarified what this entailed, Noel sounded upset that he could not give the guy some grief as he was not a Health and Safety Officer!

Mr Edmonds muttered something about conkers too and the audience seemed to cheer this derision of Health and Safety.

Then I watch Top Gear and good old Jeremy is giving Health and Safety a dam good pasting too! Well, at least it raises the profile of H&S I suppose. Any other positive points?

Yes there is a positive point. Let's go out and prove them wrong.

Let's bring a practical and pragmatic approach to H&S. Let's stop denigrating the profession by calling it elf n saf..., let's condemn those advocation OTT practices.

Let's stand up for ourselves.

One positive, personal interaction with a sensible H&S professional that facilitates or helps will outweigh all these silly jibes.

Make a difference to someone and win a mind.

Quite right Peter and tabs.

Did you notice that while Jez and team were doing their thing (laying a road surface), and J was on about how they could do it really quickly because they had no health and safety man to get in their way (snigger snigger chortle)....

At all times they were wearing their hard hats and high-vis.

Maybe, just maybe, the chaps actually thought it was a good idea to protect themselves when working in the dark around lots of machinery? And maybe the experienced people they were working with thought so too?

What a lot of wimps - if they were truly anti-safety they should have had no PPE and been proud!!

GSP - unless you are joking, it was that type of response I had in mind when talking about a practical and pragmatic approach!

Let's concentrate on the bigger issues.

Have been talking to many audiences this past year or so from WI to local schools, in an attempt to explain why the local media like to have a shot at degrading what true H&S is.

During the question time, it is simply amazing just how many folks have not the faintest idea what is involved other than the misconception we chose this job because the local tax inspectorate had no vacancies or we were over qualified to become a traffic warden. It is these comments that are easy to respond to and I take pleasure in leaving an audience with a completely different view of true H&S and what it really means.

Actually it was the company car that swung it, so unfortunately I can't go along that path.

Unforunately we as a country have a built in aversion to following rules and anybody who in effect tries to get people to follow the rules is a killjoy. Just have a look the next time you go abroad, guaranteed the person you see jaywalking or illegally parking or jumping a queue will be British. I get the same response at home when I explain to my teenage sons why they can't stay out 'till midnight "even though their mates do" I guess we're just big nasty spoilsports who won't let people get hurt "even though their mates are allowed to"
Seriously though, people in this country are really starting to lose any sense of self responsibility or self control, anybody watch that tragic display on big brother? cringeworthy! Quite shocking when you think that the none of the 3 finalists were British, they put the British contingent to shame. Then what about the shipwreck fiasco, made me very proud to see my countrymen and women looting other peoples property, and all beamed around the world for all to see!
It's not us folks, it's them, we have big problems in this country and it's getting worse, we need to stand our ground and hold our heads up high!

Noel Edmunds - back in the very distant past, 15 years ago, his show was involved in a fatal accident? Or is my memory playing tricks?

Mr Lush's selection for the stunt may have been live. The fatal incident was recorded and presumably available to investigators but never broadcast.

I do not think we can be practical or pragmatic ( not avin a pop Peter)in our approach to solving H & S issues or tasks anymore, as we have to comply with the appropriate regs, look at the thread on fitting a small aerial on a porta cabin roof some weeks back, no agreed practical or simple answer on how it could be done from loads of safety people, just confusion.

I also hope that the rest of the world think like a lot of us do and know there is good and bad in everyone no matter where you come from.

How about closer to home on driving issues, nearly all persons who drive in the bus lanes (in London)or park illegally are not from the UK.

Those people on the beach do not make me feel bad (we are not all on the beach)it's the people who take the ---- out of our country by flouting our laws, and protesting against our way of life and then have the audacity to say what bad people we are.

We give sanctuary to vast numbers of people from around the world and give them protection, homes, benefits and the right to our laws and legislation.

I cannot go anywhere in the world and receive the same.

We would do well to remember the ultimate contribution that was given by others to ensure that we can go down the pub or anywhere else and talk about what we like without retribution.

Where else in the world do they do this?

We already are a good country.
We already are good people.

but it will not always be so, those in control / power have let all those who made the ultimate sacrifice down, BIG TIME.

Moderator - would you remove the last posting from Salus please. The number of immigrants in the UK may be a political issue but it is not relevant to this discussion.
