Is chartered membership of IOSH an acceptable sign of competence as required by the CDM Regulations 2007. I have another 5 months before I can apply for Chartered status even though I passed the required 20 points last summer - can this not be pushed through sooner - why wait the 2 years?

I do not think it is mentioned and to some extent can see why.
Unfortuantly a sound knowledge of H&S only is not going to get us through the CDM-C role. (I am begining to find that out myself and still have a way to go)
I think we are going to have to look at this as a specialist subject and constantly improve ourselves to the desired skill set required to really achieve what the AcoP is hoping to be achieved.
Dont get me wrong, H&S pro's will always have a very important role in this work, but they also need to know how the other parts work i.e. Design.
I see it like this although simplified
H&S = Get a best friend called designer
Designer = Get a best friend called H&S
H&S + Designer = Get a best friend whom is a super skilled interactive manager.
All of the above = Try to become the Clients best friend :)
Hence we enter the "can a CDM-C be one man debate?"
I will duck out at this point as the flames start to fly.

I have been Chatererd since day 1 and have worked in construction safety since 1998. I consider myself competent but only in limited areas i.e. principle contractor.
I have done Planning Supervisor for small projects but looking at the new regs I do not have the necessary competence so will shy away from PS/coordinator role in future.
I say just keep to what you know!

The new ACoP states the following....
FOR DESIGN ORGANISATIONS- details of number/percentage of people engaged in the project who have passed a construction health and safety assessment, e.g. the CITB Construction Skills touch screen test or affiliated schemes, or the CCNSG equivalent;
Details of any relevant qualifications and/or professional Institution membership and Any other specific qualifications such as ICE construction H&S Register, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, APS Design Register;
FOR CDM - COORDINATORS- details of number/percentage of people engaged in the project who have passed a construction health and safety assessment, e.g. the CITB Construction Skills touch screen test or affiliated schemes, or the CCNSG equivalent;
Evidence of health and safety knowledge such as NEBOSH Construction Certificate;
Details of Professional Institution membership and any other specific qualifications such as member of the co-ordinators register administered by the APS, ICE construction H&S register etc.
Evidence of a clear commitment to training and the Continuing Professional Development of staff.
This isn't 'set in stone' and could change slightly, but there is no mention of IOSH - it rightly focuses on construction skills and experience
