One for the catering specialists here:

Is anyone familiar with vegetable paring machines and in particular the requirement under PUWER to prevent access to moving parts? These machines are designed to be emptied by opening the front cover to allow the vegetables to fall out whilst the paring plate is still revolving.

The obvious hazard is the revolving plate with the risk of injury from the operator getting their fingers too close.

I guess my question is would it be standard practice to have such a machine retro fitted with a guard of some kind without the guard inhibiting the intended use, and would this be done by the manufacturer?

All replies welcome.

Many thanks.

I am not familiar with the machine you describe but surely access cannot be allowed while the blade is rotating. The manufacturer may well be the best option for a guard.

Thanks for your reply Paul.

It is not strictly a blade but rather a flatish plate with a roughly textured surface that acts rather like an abrasive. The main danger is that it is still revolving when the door is opened.
