Are employers investing enough time to support people with alcohol problems in their workforce or do they ignore the problem or dismiss people on other pretexts ?

depends on the employer and the circumstances that identify the problem exists.

Many years ago I worked for a company who automatically responded to an incident where alcohol was a contributory factor by dismissing the employee. In that specific case, I agreed with the employers decision. The employee made no attempt to make the employer aware of the problem therefor; no assistance discussed or made available.

Same time a company we worked closely with introduced a D&A policy that identified assistance for employees with problems. About a dozen came forward, were given assistance and ultimately 8 returned to work.

As I said, depends on employer and circumstances.

Why should it be down to the employer. Unless the person comes forward and admits they have a problem there is nothing an employer can do to help. I worked for one company where it was obvious the employee had a problem. When confronted employee would not admit they had a problem. They were dismissed, no problem.

I think the world will be a better place when people take full responsibility for their actions instead of trying to get someone else to do it for them.

Remember people are only in work on average 8/9 hours a day. That leaves them with another 15/16 hours of the day to sort themselves out.
