Posted By Andrew Palmer Hi I have been asked to take on the role of H&S coordination (inc competent person) for a Housing Association. We have 600 staff, across about 60 sites, including care work and gardening teams. I am looking for some benchmarking information and would welcome anyone who can give me the 3 simple pieces of info: Type of Business: Number of Staff: Approx no of sites: Number of H&S staff: Any other information will be appreciated. Regards Andrew

>15000 employees + >500 semi perm contractors + >500 on and off contractors [average of >1000 construction works at any one time irrespective of anything else] in >40 differing industrial / business /support areas working via all types of shifts + interface with the public =
3 full time advisers + 1 part time adviser & no admin support - Q? are they scratching the service?
your figures appear to towards the average - the figures quoted above are not made up
IOSH /IIRSM have carried out surveys call on them

Posted By J Knight Hi Folks,
Business Healthcare and Charity retailing, 3,000 employees, about 450 sites of which about 420 are small to very small. Currently 1 HS&E Manager and 1 H&S Adviser. Hoping to grow to 3.5 f.t advisers; this is based on an analysis of training need in Healthcare and on the fact that I have to deliver on the Environment, which currently has barely started, and the fact that our workplaces are scattered over the whole of the UK mainland,
John

Posted By Pete48 Andrew Simple ratios are not the best way to determine H&S resource requirements. What is more important in establishing what is needed is: -the strategy for H&S in the organisation and how well this is integrated into board or exec level thinking -where the organisation is in terms of both simple things like legal compliance, staff knowledge as well as the softer things like culture etc. -the geographic spread as well as number of locations -the width or variety of business activity. -the infrastructure available (IT systems, intranets, video conferencing, home working et al) I have worked as a lone H&S person "covering" hundreds of sites with thousands of employees and been bored because all I had to do was keep up to date with regs, do analysis, a bit of training and lead on auditing. Equally I have worked with a team of one skilled and competent H&S person at each of 40 manufacturing locations, a central admin staff of 2 and never stopped for 3 years! Define what the needs are and then staff from there. (just realised that this may be patronising you, not intended! apologies if I have)

Posted By Glyn Atkinson Approx 1000 employees including management structure and office workers -
2 sites including three satellite production areas within two mile radius of busy dual carriageway road system at peak hours.
Customer Care unit with engineers /vehicles working nationally and internationally in some cases.
High level of under 25 years workers in a fast manufacturing bonus scheme.
Currently one H&S manager - own car in use, awaiting with eagerness for 5th March when a new assistant starts to lighten the workload, or delivery of a time machine to help be in two (or more ) places at once.
Used to be less production areas and four H&S persons in total until redundancy problems in 2005.
Happy days !
