Posted By Christopher Hi all
I want to set up my own website. Can anyone provide me with advice re hosting etc. In my own subjects, I'm brilliant, but when it comes to IT, I never reached the end of the assembly line.
Many thanks

Posted By Pat Hannaway Hi Christopher, I use a company called "Fasthosts". My business web site has only has 3 pages, but I understand that I could have about 10 - 15 pages for my subscription. I have used them for three years and generally found them to be helpful for first time users. Initial registration of my web address was free. They can provide free software for designing a range of websites and they charge approx. £2.50 per month to host your site. Their address is www.fasthosts.co.uk. There are other numerous webhosting companies, and you can find their details in the computer magazines (e.g. Web User). PS you will receive notification from a separate NET organisation after about two years requesting payment of £90 to retain your exclusive web address. You need to pay this. Regards and good luck with your business! Pat

If you take a look in your local Yell.com and/or chamber of commerce I am sure you will find some help, if you are looking to pay for the service. It is important to ensure that the site has search-able aspects and key words. I don't fully understand the technical terms, but I believe this is known as 'spidering'.
Most marketing people would say that the site needs to be transactional. People are enticed to look into it and you can measure the hits versus business leads & contracts.
All the best
Ian

Posted By David Bannister Christopher, my advice would be to seek a local web designer who you can meet face to face, who can provide references and better still is recommended by a friend or family. Too many are a whizz at the IT stuff but can't communicate in real time, with everyday language.
Give some thought as to what you want your website to do for you - direct sales or merely a web-presence to demonstrate credibility. Let the designer know. If you have already got stationery printed, get your website to look similar, alternatively choose a look to suit your own business. You will have to provide most of the content, the designer will put it in to a format that can go on the net.
Finally, look at the competition and use the best ideas you see.

Posted By Christopher Thanks everyone, I much appreciate your help. I have been recommended a local website designer. I have reviewed a fair few websites. There are some very good ones out there. Its always easy when someone else has done it before.

Posted By Sharon Hi Christopher check out: http://www.ukhost4u.com/they are very good, I use these for my sites, basic hosting is only £39.99 per year. As far as what type of site/style are you looking for, there are many free scripts out there which are excellent.
