Posted By Barry Cooper Hi, I have a problem My company have a machine that has floor mounted heads. Imagine a 100mm wide slot 5m long in the floor. 8 heads are mounted over the slot. These heads slide along the slot, and can be positioned anywhere along the slot. Distance between any two heads, can generally vary between 100mm and 1000mm (can be greater sometimes).
When the heads are stationary in there respective positions, personnel walk between the heads whilst setting up the machine.
Question - how do I cover the slot to prevent someones foot becoming trapped in the slot, but without preventing the heads from moving when required.

Posted By Ken Taylor This sort of thing is difficult to visualise from a text description. You could get one of the companies that specialise in designing and making machine guards to attend site and give you their proposal and a quote.

Posted By Phil Grace Barry, Think I can visualise... What about flexible rubber "flaps" fixed to each side of slot. The heads should be able to move them to one side as they slide along. I've also seen "brush/bristle" type coverings in similar applications but they wouldn't be so useful for your purpose.
Another option might be some form of flexible metal "strip" (think tank tread) wide enough to span gap and fixed between the heads. But if spacing/separation of heads varies this may not work!

Posted By Ron Hunter Perhaps, within the bounds of reasonable practicability, the answer is you don't. Presumption here is that the area is restricted to those involved in the process, that there is a failsafe system of work which would prevent machine activation whilst personnel are in or near the area of the floor slot (light curtain interlock with (multiple)key operated reset perhaps? and that the slot is marked/highlighted by high contrast paint etc. Any flimsy covering is likely to increase a risk of entrapment. Chamfering or putting a radius on the slot would decrease the possibility, but this may not be a practical proposition.
