Posted By W S Irving I am thinking about introducing a formal warning card system both for our own people and the many sub-contractors working on our sites. Does anyone have experience of setting up such a system? Any advice on impementing such a system welcome. Regards Billy

Posted By TBC Great idea, but I would be tempted to also add a 'green' card for recognition of those who work to the rules and follow best practices in H&S.

Posted By Robert. I set up this type of card system at a former company. At the beginning it was thought kind of daft. But when the shop floor were issued yellow and red cards they all paticipated. The yellow cards were flouted when an individual was spotted doing something questionable by another workmate. However it got out of hand and the red cards were flying round meaning another tea or fag break. Still it was a good safety behaviour based method then.

Posted By Scott Russell From experience found that the yellow/red cards work well for keeping contractors/sub contractors on there toes with regard to health and safety on site, however with regard to own employees, there are HR implications depending on the result of a red card, i.e formal procedures for discipline which must be followed.

Posted By Robert. I never had a problem with HR issues. The idea was also to put some "fun" into Elf and safe tea. Why must every thing come down to discipline when H&S is mentioned. The card system was / is an excellent way to get the workers to adhere (reasonably)to the routine workplace procedures. We even used to use the "Muppet of the week" award when individuals collected a set number of yellows. But at least the wrongs were put right. It's not all about safety, it was also extended to quality as well.
