Hi All,
We currently have about 40 trained FLT drivers on site and we are looking at our options for FLT training for which I am pushing to try and get one or two of our employees trained as in-house FLT instructor(s). I think this would be cost effective and best practice however, in order to get a balanced, all-round viewpoint, can I ask for your opinions/experiences of this please?

Think you have raised the salient point already - which is the more cost effective approach? - do a cost benefit analysis and base your recommendation on that.

Hi Bonney
We have about 50 MHE in operation on our site, ranging from FLT's, Reach Truck to LLOP's. We have our own on site instructors and find that this is very beneficial and cost effective.
If you consider that apart from the initial training you also have regular refresher training to consider, we also retrain operators if they have been involved in an accident. So having our own trainers makes this easy and cost effective.
Another big advantage of having in-house trainers is that they can tailor their training to reflect the environment that the operators will be working in and can include risks specific to your site rather than just the standard training they would get for an external source.
Also any staff that we take on who already have a valid Flt licence, will receive an assessment on site prior to being let loose. This is a good way to prove that they are still competent and to make them aware of the site specific MHE rules!
I hope i have been of some help!
Simon

Simon,
I was interested in your cost effective solution and having in house trainers. I would like to take it forward in my own company. I was just wondering when drivers are competent - does the Trainer issue a certificate / card and if so do your Trainers have to be registered with an organisation in order to issue these. Many thanks

Hi Martin
There are several MHE companies, RITTB for example, which supply train the trainer courses for MHE Trainers.
From these supplies you will be able to gain assessment sheets, which are part of the test and cover a criteria and a scoring scheme. If an operator passes he is then issued with an in house training certificate both of which are kept on their training file.
We also use the assessment forms to prove competence and for re-fresher training as this is a good way to show what was covered as part of the training.
Best bet is to Google it and see what you get!
Simon
