Posted By Chris121 hello all can anyone give me some pointers on the issues to cover when undertaking a risk assessment of engineers working underneath floorboards - they are installing network cabelling thanks

Posted By Frank Newman Rats. And various dead things. Seriously though, there are lots of issues. Starting from the above think asbestos and fungal infections. Think old services and rotting electrics. Think about shoving your hands into a blind hole. And how about a method statement for lifting the floorboards. And if someone strikes buried treasure (could happen) how do you organise the divvy without a punch-up ? I was once on a site where they had discovered a complete tool-box full of 1920's type tools. Worth a bit at the boot sale. Merv

Posted By Alan Nicholls Chris If they are working UNDER the floor boards, it would also be classed as a confined space. Rather them than me, don't like confined spaces. Good luck Alan N

Posted By Amanda Think about things such as: Sharps, be they drug paraphernalia or broken glass. Also think about asbestos fibres (see the campaign page on hse website)in buildings pre 2000 Try talking to some of the operatives who have done this type of work I am sure they can give you lots of examples of things they have found. Hope this helps.

Posted By Alexander Falconer We encounter this as part of our central heating installation programmes - common issues are as follows: Confined space Dampness/wet foundations Live electrics Old/disused services Buried services Low height hazards Some foundations can be as much as 6feet plus down so you need to watch the drop depth. Rodents - more than likely to be house/field mice rather than rats, also consider the possibility of Weils disease (however remote) In some country houses consider the likelihood of rabbits/foxes/weasels/stoats etc underneath houses (It has known to happen in older style properties in remote areas) Also consider the aspect of householders possibly falling through unattended access hatches (look at barriers/hatch covers) I am sure you can come up with a few more, as the rest of the respondents have done Alex
