Does anyone know when manufacturers stopped using asbestos in brake pads for private vehicles?

Brake linings, as defined in the Road Vehicles (Brake Linings Safety) Regs 1999, are exempt from Regs 26(4), 28(1) and 29(1) of Part 3 of CAR06 (the prohibitions section). So chrysotile could still be used in some brake linings and imported. Refer to Scedule 3 of CAR06. Hope this helps.

Its been illegal to import into the EC any item which has had asbestos intentionally added to it from 1st Jan 2005 as long as replacing it with something else does not pose a greater risk.
