Hi everybody
I hv found that our First Aid Room has been abused lately ie. night shift staff having coffee(stains on the floor!!), therefore I intend to set up a regulation whereby only First Aiders or Supervisors are allowed to go in and get plasters for the Production staff.
I need opinions on whether am I too strict or am I making the right decision. I hv checked out a few websites and none of them set any regulations on their First Aid Rooms.

The question I would ask is, 'Why were they using the first aid room as a canteen in the first place?' There's usually a reason for this sort of behaviour, and if it can't be managed there's usually a reason for that too! Clearly you have a discipline and security problem if unauthorised people are accessing first aid facilities and supplies. Before you know it, there will be an emergency and no supplies to deal with it.
But if you can't manage it, then no - you're not being 'too strict'. You could try a coded keypad, which only authorised people know the code to. However, don't do what one of my companies did and write the code over the door!! Whatever you decide, make sure everyone knows what you're doing and why.

Lock the door and place the key in a break glass box just below a big first aid sign.
Information instruction and training is very important when you change something like this
You keep the second key for re-supply purposes
The people who are using the first aid room in this way would be the first to complain if it was not in a suitable condition when required for an emergency.
LOCK it for the benefit of all

May - who not put up a notice to advise staff that abusing this facility could be seen as a breach of Sect 8 of the HASAWA and that they could be prosecuted for this?

At our place of work I am looking after 30 First Aiders Which all have a key for the first aid room, The only other people who have a key is the security team which are also trained first aiders. I have also gone down the route of all first aiders having there own personal locker with there own first aid supplies in, This way I can manage where all the supplies are being used and which department are not reporting accidents. We have seen a large increase in accidents being reported since this but the majority are paper cuts and other minor accidents that would not usually be reported.
