Dear All
We have a site where we have corrugated roof sheet waste that has been analysed and shown not to be an asbestos containing material, however apparently there is a trace of asbestos (less than 1%) on the sheeting where it had abutted against another section of roofing which does contain asbestos.
This waste has to be disposed of. My understanding is that this has to be treated as hazardous waste owing to contamination with asbestos, albeit only with a trace amount.
However, I have a colleague who is insisting that it can dealt with as normal controlled waste.
Can anyone advise on this situation, please?

If when you say a 'Site' you mean a building site or construction site, then yes the hazardous waste regulations will apply, as they do for virtually ALL building sites. You will therefore need to register the site with the EA as a site that produces hazardous waste.

Thank you for this.
This is not a construction site. It is on the office premises of a client.
The site is already registered as a producer of HW.
I am looking for confirmation that this waste would definitely be classified as hazardous.

if the waste does not pose a risk to health it is not a hazardous waste even if it contains more than 0.1 % of asbestos by weight.

The classification of hazardous wastes are very wide ranging and include almost anything that is not inert waste, so regardless of any asbestos contamination, there is a very high probability that the roof sheets will be classed as hazardous waste - this has nothing to do with the asbestos content, though this may also make it hazardous.
For a definitive list of all hazardous wastes, have a look at the following site:
