Posted By Ian Clay1 I would like some help with this one please. We have had 4 accidents in the last 20 years with Hedge Cutters all in the last 12 months and involving cuts to the leg. Staff are demanding that we look at issuing further PPE e.g. trousers with leg protection. where this is an option i am a great believer in looking at training and competency as well as looking at where the cutters were used etc a thorough investigation and then look at the control measures around training etc prior to looking at PPE as a last resort. What is every ones thoughts on this and is there anyone who has been in a similar situation. Any urgent help please prior to the meeting tomorrow would be gratefully received.

Surely if you have had no accidents in the 19 years prior to this year then there has been an obvious change in procedure or practice. Have you changed the type of hedge trimmer used? Changed type of blade? Have you changed Personnel? Have you increased the workload? Are you working in different environments now? Have you changed the training programme? Have you lapsed on refresher training? Are near misses openly reported and investigated? All of the above should be considered. Good luck in stopping these accidents occuring.
