Does anyone have any ideas (or suitable powerpoint presentation) for delivery to a group of Primary schoolkids?
I have to deliver a suitable presentation to them next week, to display the dangers of Construction/housebuilding sites, and persuade them to stay away etc.
I have a good supply of the rather nifty HSE handout MISC447 "stay safe- building site safety" and I'll probably base the talk on that, but if anyone has anything already that I could adapt to local environmental conditions, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Joe

You might not think this helpful but the last thing I would do is a Powerpoint presentation.

How about just introducing the subject and initiating a discussion with the children.

In my experience with this approach the children may engage & learn more......no different to adults really!

I agree with Phillip. You need to be interactive with young kids.
Show them a video of a large dumper or similar taken from ground level complete with noise.
Drop a brick on a hard hat.
Take some ear defenders and get one to put them and get the class to shout as loud as possible.
Take a load of ppe and get them to tell you where you have to wear it and why they think you do.
Key thing is for them to be doing something rather than sitting and learning directly from you.
Have a word with the head or teacher at the school. They will happy to discuss methods with you.
Hope this helps. There are a lot of websites from the Learning and Skills Council, ROSPA, wise up2 work etc that you can use to gather other stuff like a quiz.

Having done this many times recently I have found with the younger chaps and chapesses that involvement is the key issue. A few well spent minutes setting up with a cable, chair (broken and collapses when you sit in it) exposed wires etc etc, in other words things that they can relate to that they see on a day-to-day basis.

I invite them to tell me what they consider is wrong; of course I do the mandatory tripping over the cable, the collapsing chair and the pretend electric shock all of which gets a good interaction going and the hands fly up with who wants to identify the next hazard. I have been amazed how fast they learn, the game of hazard and risk gets faster and faster and they are a joy to teach. Moving on to construction yields the same positive result. They are neither frightened or intimidated, and I certainly never knowingly talk down to them. One local class has started it's own H&S watch committee for the school.

No PP's, nothing heavy, no handouts other than a cartoon character falling over; all in all I am informed it works well.

Good luck

Joe,

The NI Branch did a presentation on talks to schools pupils. You will find some useful web-links here.
